MELAY - Faded Morgana Exclusive Interview

Updated: Apr 15

DJ/Producer Melay is having a great year. With tons of shows under his belt, insanely hot original House music tracks bein' dropped, and a Co-Founding position in one of LA's hottest new music collective's, we figured he would be a perfect choice for FM's next installment of Mix Friday. We asked the rising legend a few questions and he had a ton of cool info to share.

Where did your name come from?

Haha so It actually came from playing in so many super smash bros tournaments when I was younger so the name just kinda stuck, that and I used to get into fights as a kid.

How long have you been producing?

I was Audio engineering for about 2 years before I realized I wanted to produce and I’ve been producing for about 3 years now, wish I would’ve started sooner no lie

How long have you been DJing?

Djing has always been my passion since my cousin first showed me turntables and breakbeats. That’s what got me into the idea of producing, but overall I’ve been spinning for about 10years now.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Most of my influences came from the whole fidget house era like Crookers, Astronomer, Count & Sinden, Herve, AC Slater. I’ve always loved the weirder sounding stuff, its always full of fresh ideas. Artist now would have to be Chris Lorenzo and Taiki Nulight hands down.

Do you play any instruments?

I used to play trumpet, trombone, and bass but now I’m usually just on my keyboard. Couldn’t take the chapped lips anymore.

Your collective, Low Freqs, is garnering a lot of attention in the past year. Can you tell us a little about your mission with the music collective?

When I first started this with Candl we both agreed we would try to change how the industry works, less about clout and fame, more about the love of music and the community. All of the people in the label are now people I consider family and we all support each other and push each other daily. The only thing I ever wanted from this group is love and support for each other and they do that to the fullest, which makes me very proud. I just wanna change peoples minds about music based on the mentality of “I only like this type of music”. Music is for everyone and as artists we can give back to this big electronic scene with our own unique sound. Hopefully one day change someone’s life through music like many artists have changed mine.

Who are some other artists you think we should be on the look out for right now?

Right now I’d have to say candl, dudes been killing it in production. Also some buddies from the UK that go by Bean and Moretein, they’ve been putting out some real nasty stuff and slicing up the underground scene.

What your future plans with the project as of now?

Right now we’re in the motion to start dropping Eps including an ep I’m working on and a gang of singles with the whole crew and some new friends

When can we expect another Low Freqs comp??

In November and we’re gunna have a lot of new faces from the UK, Russia, and some familiar faces from out here in the states.

What can we expect from your FM mix?

In this mix I wanted show  what I like to call sewer house haha, it’s a lot of the grimy weird  underground tracks from some buddies in the UK and LA. It’s really become my style in the last couple of years.
